KARBALA, IRAQ - April 23, 2003: After midnight and at dawn, Iraqi Shiite Muslim pilgrims bloody themselves with swords in the holy city of Karbala, to mark 40 days after the death of Imam Hussein, grandson of the Islamic prophet Mohamed. For the first time in more than 30 years, Shiite Muslim long-repressed by the secular regime of Saddam Hussein, are now able to freely celebrate such holy days. An estimated one million people from across Iraq, many of them traveling for days on foot, visited the Shrine this week. (Photo by Scott Peterson/Getty Images)
